March 12, 2019
Gather 6:30 pm
Meeting 7:00 pm
Lynn Rinehart, Co-Star of Stitch TV and a Certified Quilt Appraiser, is our presenter at the March meeting. She will discuss modern quilting, the modern quilting movement, aesthetic, and online community. The presentation covers the origins of the movement, common themes and design styles for modern quilts, and the many ways modern quilters connect on social media to organize bees, swaps, and more.
The Stitch TV Show started in 2015 as the first online quilt talk show. Lynn met her partner and co-star through a local quilt guild and they found themselves talking about their passion for quilting all the time.
Through a promotional video for their guild quilt show, they learned they were good on camera together. Hosted on YouTube, the show has grown to 4,000 subscribers purely through word of mouth, reaching around the globe to quilters from Australia to Europe, to their own backyard in Atlanta.
On Wednesday, March 13, Ms. Rinehart will conduct a full day workshop. The first half of the workshop will teach skills to complete the Strippers Knot quilt, which is a modern version of Drunkard Path. Working with stripped piecing and curved piecing can be a challenge, but students will learn to tackle this simple block to create a dynamic quilt for maximum impact.
Skills covered in class are: using templates to cut quilt block pieces; working with strata and bias piecing and curved piecing. A completed full-size quilt is pictured on this page.
The workshop will be held at the Amelia Island History Museum, located at 233 S. 3rd Street. Workshop hours 9:00 - noon. The second half of the workshop features free sewing available until 4:00 pm.
Cost for the workshop is $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Registration for the workshop is available until all spaces are filled at the March meeting or you may contact Lauree Hemke at lchemke at comcast.net.
Ms. Rinehart will be available for scheduled quilt appraisals. Sign-up for appraisals will be available at the March meeting or you may contact Lauree Hemke at lchemke at comcast.net. Cost for appraisals is $75 for members and $85 for non-members.
